"Working together for the benefit of our diverse congregations and communities is a long-standing tradition for Unitarian Universalists. Our roots in North America go back to the independent, self-governing churches of colonial New England, who covenanted to help one another in times of need. In Europe, our heritage reaches back to religious and social reformers in England, Poland and Transylvania, Romania.

The UUA was formed in 1961 through the consolidation of two faith traditions, the Universalist Church of America, organized in 1793, and the American Unitarian Association, organized in 1825. Today the UUA is a religious family of more than 1,000 congregations that support each other and bring to the world a theology of tolerance, interdependence and compassion.

A Board of Trustees elected by our congregations governs the UUA, in accordance with our commitment to the democratic process. The Association is charged to support the ongoing work of the the congregations. Annually, we hold a meeting of the entire Association, called General Assembly, where delegates representing their congregations vote on Association issues." (From the UUA website.)
