UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CHURCH OF FORT MYERS NOW HOME TO PEACE POLEThe Peace Pole in the courtyard of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fort Myers is a monument to peace and a symbol of hope for peace around the world. It has the words "May Peace Prevail On Earth" engraved in eight languages on its' four sides. There is also a plaque with the same words in Braille. To quote the makers of the Peace Poles, "The Peace Pole reminds us to keep peace ever-present in our thoughts. As we learn to honor one another, our environment, plants, animals and all creation on Earth, the vision of global peace will gradually become a natural way of life, a true culture of Peace." The first Peace Pole was erected at Hiroshima, Japan in 1955 at the site of the atomic bomb explosion. Since that time over 200,000 poles have been erected in over 180 countries. The pole at the Unitarian Universalist Church was erected in May as a gift to the congregation. It was dedicated on May 25th to the memory of Ed Porteus. Ed was a dedicated member of the congregation who died in 2004. During the 15 years he was a member he served as President twice and as coordinator of construction for the campus on Shire Lane. He also served in both state and national leadership positions with the Unitarian Universalist Association.

A Loss to Our Community
We are saddened to have to report that beloved member, LeClair Bissell passed away. A memorial service will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, October 11th at the church. A Reception will follow. Per LeClair's executor trustee, contributions to be made in LeClair's name can be made to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fort Myers.
A Message From Our Minister.... This is a sad time for us at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fort Myers. LeClair Bissell has been a quiet yet active pillar of this church, and she leaves us with a significant loss. She was sick for a few days beforehand in Connecticut, and we had been preparing to send out a communication soliciting cards and prayers. During that time we received news that LeClair had died due to further complications. In the brief time and conversations I had with her she revealed her passion for politics and justice, her quick wit and dry humor. She also revealed her tremendous and spacious heart- one that reached out to people and animals with equal amounts of compassion and assistance. LeClair was involved in many communities where she will be missed. My husband Andy and I are grateful to have met her and gotten to know her. So I can only imagine how some of you may feel. Should you need to connect, I am available at the church Tuesday through Thursday or you can call me at 239-321-9987.
With you,
